Mahalo to Nick from Honolulu

The Big Island of Hawaii is the Southernmost island in the state, and as such its South Point is the Southernmost spot in the non-continental US. This scenic area is characterized by rolling pastureland and dramatic sea cliffs. An ancient Hawaiian settlement here was primarily a fishing village, and in later years area was used as a point to offload cattle onto ships headed for Oahu. Today, its scenery and geographical significance draw visitors on their way around the island, as well as those hiking to nearby Green Sands Beach.

The turn-off to South Point Road is located between marker 69 and 70 on Hwy 11 (The Belt Road, see MAP at the bottom of this page). It is a scenic one and a half lane road that takes you past rural homesteads, pastureland with grazing cattle and horses, an eerie old wind farm, a new wind farm (in the distance), and leads to a boat ramp area used by local fishing boats. Please note that the waters along the coast here are not safe for swimming as they have strong currents.

* This scenic area is the southern most point in the United States
*12 miles off main Hwy 11 on to South Point on 1 ½ lane road.
* Huge sea cliffs used for training soldiers during WW II –look for the barracks foundations that were used into the 1960's / 70's on the road to green sands.
* Be careful around the steep sea cliffs. There are also several blow hole size holes inland from the cliffs. Kids especially should be supervised at all times.
* Cattle pastures - rustic pastureland – wind mill farms
* Cattle were hoisted off cliffs onto ships years ago.
* Today, local fisherman pole fish and also send rope lines out to sea with plastic floats made from detergent containers, etc. The waters are known as a good fishing spot.
* Actual "South Point" around the rock wall past the light beacon.
* Strong currents – not safe for swimming off south point as well
as Green Sands beach.
