Thurston Lava Tube

Lava tubes are created when an underground river of lava begins to
cool from the outside. This leaves an outer crust that forms the tube.
The inner molten lava continues to move, creating an instant tunnel.
The Thurston Lava Tube is approx. 200 yards/meters long,
with some ceilings inside up to 10 yards/meters high.

Plan on about 30 minutes for this side trip.

The stairs above are the exit from the tube.
There are approx. 25 shallow steps.
If you have trouble negotiating stairs, consider entering
and exiting via the entrance ramp.

There are occasional short stairs within the tube and the
interior is artificially lighted.

Note: After a rain storm, there can be puddling and slick trails.
